Student Driving & Insurance, Tips for Parents
Getting behind the wheel as a parent can be a little frightening at first, but just remember you were in your son’s or daughter’s shoes at one point too. Taking it on a gradient can be key for your student driver to grasp the fundamentals of driving.
Once they receive their learners permit they can get behind the wheel (no pun intended), and start learning how to drive a physical car.
Gradients for Driving
Starting in a wide open space (where permitted) for the teen grasp the feel of the gas and brake pedals, clutch if your teaching them how to drive a manual vehicle, and steering wheel. Once your teen gets a good grasp of the vehicle they are driving you can start to move to residential or empty roads.
Keeping the vehicle in the same lane at constant speed would not be a bad idea to have as a goal for this step.
Once the teen has a good grasp on this one can increase the gradient accordingly, at the discretion of the parent.
Agreement
Remember to stay in clear communication with your teen. Get their agreement for you to give them instructions and tips. With a know -it-all teen, you may have some difficulties communicating these tips and instructions. So a good preliminary action would be to get their agreement to receive those tips and instructions. Otherwise you may here these all too uncommon words “I know Mom!”.
Patience
Patience is a virtue and this is a good time to exercise it. Put yourself in their shoes and treat them how you would want yourself to be treated when being taught how to drive. Being calm and not getting frustrated would be one good virtue of an instructor. Maintaining clear communication and clear instructions can also help the situation.
Plan Before
Plan a good route beforehand and explain it to them so you are both in agreement as to where you will be practicing driving. You can even pick a spot to practice parallel parking, something which will come up on the driver’s test with the DMV. Make sure to practice it well it and develop a system your teen can use to measure how close he is to curve. There are many tips and videos on this online.

When your teen starts driving it is very important make sure they are insured, in fact this a crucial time to have your teen fully insured as in their first year on the road, teens are almost 10 times more likely to be in a crash. TIP
When shopping around for insurance for your teen there are several things which you can check on. The first being that you can check the price for your family’s insurance with your teen on the policy. When adding a teen onto the policy, make sure to check with many different companies, or let us do that for you. This is due to having a new factor greatly affecting your insurance. Just because you found the cheapest insurance company for yourself and your wife or husband does not mean it’s the cheapest insurance with your teen driver.
When checking several insurance companies you can check to see if you can have two separate policies. One for your family and one for your teen, providing that you would have to have each other excluded on your respective insurance policies, you can get an idea of the cost it would be two have two separate policies. There are a number of ways to do this.
Some companies even provide multi-policy as well as multi-car policies. Check on these discounts to see if they would apply. This is a little life hack which you can use, but check first with your insurance company to make sure they can accept two policies. In some cases you may need to have a completely separate vehicle, which is not on the parent’s policy and only on the teen drivers.
